OGTR Invites Comments on Commercial Release Application of GM Canola

August 26, 2011

Australia's Office of Gene Technology Regulatory has invited comments for the license application of Bayer CropScience for a commercial release of genetically modified (GM) canola, InVigor® x Roundup Ready® canola. The GM canola contains genes for tolerance to two different herbicides (glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium) and a hybrid breeding system. The proposed commercial release would take place in all canola growing regions in Australia. Products from the the crop will be used similar with those from non-GM canola and other commercially approved GM canola.

A consultation Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan (RARMP) has been prepared, which concludes that the proposed release would pose negligible risk to human health and safety or to the environment. Submissions or comments on the proposed RARMP should be received by close of business on 18 October 2011.
