Experts Investigate the Status of Food Supply and Demand in China

August 26, 2011

Scientists from the College of Economics, Nankai University, Tianjin, China investigated the status of food supply and demand in the country in the Report of Chinese Food Supply and Demand -- Security Concerns after Seven Years of Growth.  Commissioned by the Ministry of Education, the report noted that soaring demands from population, restriction of land, labor force and water resource, and international trade barriers were major challenges facing Chinese food security.

The report recommended four strategies to address these concerns:

  •  Enhance farmers' enthusiasm for growing grain.
  • Strengthen agricultural infrastructure, while accelerating innovation in agri-science and technology.
  • Strengthen the social service system.
  • Support food production to actively respond to international competition.
