Bolivia Association Asks for GM to Address Rising Fuel Prices

February 4, 2011

The Association of Oilseed and Wheat Producers of Bolivia (ANAPO) have asked the government to expand the use of GM crops to tackle the effects of rising fuel prices. According to Demetrio Perez, president of ANAPO, "GM products are already consumed in Bolivia, and we want to produce more with lesser production costs, less environmental pollution and avoid the use of herbicide applications." He suggested that the government introduce plants resistant to drought and certain pests.

José Manuel Pinto, vice minister of Land, said that this proposal has already been received and is currently under review.
