Grant Targets Gene Activity Behind Hybrid Vigor

June 11, 2009

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has awarded the Centre for Plant Conservation Genetics (CPCG) with a $300,000 (250,000 USD) grant by to study the molecular underpinnings of hybrid vigor in cereal crops. The grant, announced by Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Minister Kim Carr, is expected to help scientists at the institute develop better hybrid cereals sooner. The CPCG is based in the Southern Cross University in New South Wales.

Dan Waters, a researcher in the institute, pointed out that hybrid cereals have much higher yields, higher levels of adaptation to different environments and require less water and produce more grain from less land. However, identifying the best parent combinations for hybrid breeding is more of a trial and error process and can be time consuming.
