Egyptian Professor Point Out BT Maize Benefits

December 7, 2007

Maize trials in Egypt show that corn borers were adequately controlled when Bt maize was planted and that yields increased by 30 percent over the conventional variety. Prof. Magdy AbdelDhaher, faculty of agriculture of Alexandria University, also added that silage production increased by 24 percent when Bt maize was planted.

Prof. AbdelDhaher shared these insights to a group of media and directors of agricultural authorities during a workshop on the importance of biotech crops. The workshop which was organized by the Egypt Biotechnology Information Center (EBIC) discussed the application of agricultural biotechnology in general and insect resistant maize in particular.
