Mongolia, Luxembourg Ratify Nagoya Protocol

Mongolia and Luxembourg are the latest countries that ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Protocol aims to provide a greater legal certainty and transparency for providers and users of genetic resources to strengthen the opportunities for fair and equitable sharing of benefits from their use.
Adopted at the fifth Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the Biosafety Protocol in Nagoya, Japan in 2010, the Supplementary Protocol provides international rules and procedures for liability and redress in the event of damage resulting from living modified organisms (LMOs). It will enter into force once 50 countries have ratified the Protocol.
