Proposed Regulation of GM Food in Hongkong

March 20, 2013

In a four page document published by USDA FAS GAIN, the Hong Kong government announced its intention to regulate genetically modified food. A pre-market safety assessment scheme was introduced for such purpose. Under government's regulatory framework, a GM food developer would need to apply to the Hong Kong government if any food products that will be sold in the country contain GM raw materials. However, the government stated that there is no plan yet for mandatory labeling.
