Kommerell: Wheat No Longer a Minor Crop in Sub-Saharan Africa

October 24, 2012

In a wheat conference in Addis Ababa last Oct. 8-12, CGIAR Program Manager on Wheat Research Victor Kommerell said that wheat is no longer a minor crop in sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, The CGIAR Research Program on Wheat (WHEAT), led by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and other research and development partners is a first step to perform comprehensive research and broker results to the farmers in the region.

With 3 years of assured CGIAR funding plus bilateral donors and projects, WHEAT will harness the collective strengths of the international agricultural R&D community, to make a real difference to women smallholder farmers, rural communities, and the wheat dependent poor.
