Description: The Tree Biotechnology Project was started in
1997 in an attempt to increase the area of
forest and the supply of forestry products and
services in Kenya, where land clearance for
agriculture and increasing demand for wood,
particularly fuelwood, is causing widespread
deforestation and forest degradation. Current
tree planting efforts are severely constrained
by a lack of good quality seed and slow,
inefficient traditional propagation methods.
Unless urgent steps are taken, Kenya will soon
be facing a fuelwood crisis, which is likely to
have severe implications in terms of human
health and welfare as well as contributing to
further environmental damage. |
