Anthropic's AI Claude Discovers Novel Enzyme System with CRISPR-Like Repeats

September 30, 2026

Anthropic has announced that its AI assistant, Claude, autonomously discovered a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like traits. Operating with only high-level instructions, a fleet of roughly 950 Claude agents analyzed vast DNA sequence databases over 21 hours. The AI successfully identified an uncharacterized bacterial immune mechanism now named array-associated reverse transcriptase (ART), which features distinct repeating DNA patterns alongside reverse transcriptase enzymes.

The discovery highlights a new paradigm of human-AI collaboration in fundamental biological research. After Claude flagged the system and generated candidate reports for human review, scientists at Anthropic's Bay Area molecular biology laboratory validated the findings through lab experimentation. The ART system's unique structure, a reverse transcriptase, an accessory protein, and a non-coding DNA repeat array, resembles programmable gene editing systems like CRISPR, though its exact biological function remains under study.

The breakthrough has already caught the attention of leading figures in the scientific community. By establishing an in-house wet lab alongside its AI development teams, Anthropic aims to continue using Claude to comb through massive genomic datasets, formulate hypotheses at scale, and accelerate potential biotechnological breakthroughs.
