FAO Distributes Huge Quantities of Wheat Seeds in Pakistan
October 29, 2010 |
After facing floods, Pakistan is now receiving large quantities of wheat seeds distributed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) which will benefit more than half a million families or approximately five million people. These distributions indicate that the Rabi planting season will push through, inspite of the most destructive flood the country has ever experienced. Aside from the wheat seeds, FAO is also providing beneficiaries with vegetable seeds and fertilizer.
"Wheat is the main staple of the Pakistani diet so it is of vital importance that farmers receive seeds in time. I am happy to say that thanks to the generous and timely response of donors, we are in good shape to salvage the Rabi season for millions of people," said Luigi Damiani, FAO Senior Official leading the Organization's efforts in Pakistan.
The agricultural inputs and support came from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission, the Central Emergency Response Fund, and Belgium.
