Several Countries Still with Alarming Levels of Hunger
October 17, 2008 |
Though the world has made a significant headway in reducing hunger in the past decades, some regions still lag behind and have been regressing, said the International Food Policy Institute (IFPRI). About 33 countries have "Alarming" or "Extremely Alarming" Levels of Hunger in IFPRI's 2008 Global Hunger Index, released this week. The report states that South Asia still suffers from high levels of hunger, along with Sub-Saharan Africa showing little progress through the years.
On top of the list of the best performing countries with the highest percent change in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) is Kuwait, followed by Peru. In contrast the countries with the largest regress are Congo and North Korea.
The 2008 GHI is being released by IFPRI for the third year. GHI takes into account three separate indicators: prevalence of child malnutrition, rates of child mortality, and the proportion of people who are calorie deficient.
