Australia Increases Support for Food Security in Indonesia

August 15, 2008

Australia, through AusAID, in partnership with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) will provide support to the World Food Programme to address malnutrition caused by chronic food shortages in Nusa Tenggara Timur and Nusa Tenggara Barat in Indonesia. This aid will be in the form of nutritional food supplements for the most vulnerable targets including pregnant and nursing women and children.

In addition, a longer-term support will also be provided to improve food security such as a three-year initiative linking farmers with researchers to improve their productivity and the quality of their produce such as beef, cocoa, maize and peanuts; and linking farmers with firms that would guarantee a fair price on harvests, thus, helping to increase farmer incomes and reduce rural poverty.
