UN Climate Change Conference Highlights Role of Agrifood Systems in Climate Action
November 26, 2025| |
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) positioned sustainable and resilient agrifood systems as a vital solution for attaining the Paris Agreement goals while securing global food security. This happened during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, 2025.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu emphasized that science-based solutions in areas such as resilient crops, sustainable aquaculture, and land restoration can deliver significant results in multiple sectors, particularly in reducing emissions and improving carbon sequestration efforts. Financing remains a major challenge to support such initiatives.
The conference showcased major initiatives of the COP30 Presidency's Action Agenda which are targeted to help address the climate challenge. These include the following: Resilient Agriculture Investment for net-Zero land degradation (RAIZ), Together for the Expansion of Resilient and Restorative Agroforestry and Agroecology (TERRA), the Bioeconomy Challenge, and the Tropical Forest Forever Facility.
