Philippine Educators Convene to Help Develop Biotech Learning Materials
October 15, 2025 |
A Consultation Workshop on the Development of Learning Materials on Biotechnology was held on October 13, 2025, at the NRCP Auditorium, Taguig City, Philippines. The consultation was part of the activities of the project titled Mainstreaming Biotechnology and Biosafety in the Philippine Education Sector led by the National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines.
Science communication experts from ISAAA Inc. will lead the development of the learning materials. ISAAA Executive Director Dr. Rhodora Romero-Aldemita presented the proposed learning objectives and topics that will be used to develop modules and teaching guides.
The learning materials will be based on the findings of the research Mapping the state of biotechnology education in the Philippines: A critical assessment of student knowledge, attitudes and perceptions for national advancement, which was presented during the consultation by Dr. Armin Coronado from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
Over 40 participants, composed of secondary school teachers, university instructors and professors, biotech regulators, and industry representatives, provided their insights and suggestions to improve the proposed objectives and topic outline presented by ISAAA.
“ISAAA has decades of experience in developing information, education, and communication materials on biotechnology. We are delighted to be part of this project and contribute to deepening the knowledge and appreciation of biotechnology among learners because they will be our future scientists and decision-makers,” said Dr. Aldemita.
Mr. Enrykie Fortajada, project leader and S&T Fellow, said that the learning materials are scheduled for pilot testing at selected schools by 2026.
