FSANZ Invites Comments on Phospholipase C as Processing Aid

July 23, 2025

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application seeking approval to use the enzyme phospholipase C as a processing aid in the refining of oils and fats. The submission of comments is open until August 26, 2025, at 11:59 PM (AEST).

Phospholipase C (EC 3.1.4.3) is produced using a genetically modified (GM) strain of Bacillus licheniformis. The strain has been modified by introducing a gene from Bacillus thuringiensis, allowing it to produce phospholipase C. The safety assessment conducted by FSANZ revealed no public health or safety concerns associated with the proposed use of the enzyme.

All feedback submitted through the FSANZ Consultation Hub will be reviewed before deciding on whether the application will be approved. Submissions will be published on the FSANZ website once the public comment period closes.

For more information, read the announcement from the FSANZ website.
