Strategic Priorities for Agric Devt in Africa

February 2, 2007

Alternative approaches are necessary if agriculture in Africa can achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving poverty by 2015. “Strategic priorities for agricultural development in Easter and Central Africa”, a research report by Steven Were Omamo and colleagues at the International Food Policy Research Institute, recommend the following tactics to increase both agricultural and overall economic growth based on socio-economic models and tools:
  • Tailoring agricultural production to demand within Eastern and Central Africa
  • Encouraging a wide variety of agricultural production to match the diversity of national demands and capacities; and
  • Promoting regional cooperation in agricultural development
