UK Food and Environment Minister Backs the Cultivation of GM Crops
November 28, 2012 |
UK farmers must have access to biotech crops, given that the crops have been proven to be safe for health and the environment, according to Lord de Mauley, Britain's minister of the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra). During his speech in the launching of the new report on agricultural research priorities, Lord de Mauley stressed that EU legislation was stifling studies on GM crops, which are currently benefiting the farmers in the USA and other developing countries. "In part, this is due to the unduly slow operation of the EU approval process, that is deterring investment and innovation in this technology. We want the EU regime to operate more effectively, grounded on an objective appraisal of the potential effects of GM crops on human health and the environment," he added.
