Position Statements on Biotechnology French Academy of Science French Academy of Sciences Announces Support For Genetically Modified Crops (SRC:BNA Inc.; Daily Environment Report -- ATH:Lawrence Speer) France's Academy of Sciences has published a report which says that the current criticisms of genetically modified (GM) crops are scientifically "unfounded." The article says that the report also calls on France's government to revise its position against the commercial use of GM food. The article says that while the report advocates the use of GM crops, it also recognizes some "legitimate points made by GM critics over access to new products." The Academy suggests the development of an "international initiative to prevent industrial intellectual property laws from dissuading uses in noncommercial areas that are of general interest." In addition, the article says that the Academy calls for the drafting of an international ethics charter for biotechnology issues, which would define the terms for interaction between public research bodies in developed countries and their public and private counterparts in developing countries. The article notes that the Academy of Sciences' report in favor of GM crops is similar to the findings of a December 12 statement published jointly by France's Academy of Medicine and Academy of Pharmacology.
