ISAAA, Inc. and DA Biotech Program Launch the Biotech Media Center
| |
The reportage on agricultural biotechnology has become increasingly challenging for journalists, especially in the digital era. Complex scientific issues related to biotechnology require reporters to rapidly verify claims and gather evidence, often within tight deadlines. While digital platforms have broadened access to information, platforms like social media have also accelerated the spread of misinformation, polarized narratives, and unverified sources.
In a 2022 perception study conducted by ISAAA Inc. and its partners, the findings highlighted this growing gap in the accessibility of information and credibility of the source. The study found that social media is the most prominent source of information. However, despite being the most accessible medium of information, social media is not entirely trusted in providing information about biotechnology. Scientists, on the other hand, remain the most trusted voices, but also the least accessible.
This challenge underscored the need for a dedicated platform for journalists. Inspired by Science Media Center, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications, Inc. (ISAAA, Inc.) launches the Biotech Media Center, in collaboration with the Philippine Agriculture and Fisheries Biotechnology Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA Biotech Program). The Biotech Media Center brings official news releases, publications, and multimedia resources together in one accessible platform—making credible information easier to find, verify, and use.

The Biotech Media Center organizes content across five (5) key sections, each designed to meet specific needs of biotech reporting:
- News Releases - This section features official announcements, events, and developments in agricultural biotechnology. Each news release will provide verified information, expert quotes, and other important details of the event.
- Publications - This section contains all educational and informational materials (e.g., magazines, policy briefs, and infographics) developed by ISAAA, Inc., in collaboration with the DA Biotech Program. These materials can be used by media practitioners to better understand the topics.
- Media Library - This section is a centralized hub for multimedia resources, including photos, videos, and webinar recordings. Media practitioners can easily download or embed content to enhance news articles and feature stories.
- Events - This section highlights the upcoming activities of ISAAA Inc., such as media briefings, workshops, webinars, coffee sessions, and other knowledge-sharing seminars/fora. This section will allow journalists to track and connect directly with experts through interviews and firsthand coverage.
- About Us - This section provides a brief background on the Biotech Media Center and ISAAA, Inc. This section establishes credibility as a trusted source of information in agri-biotechnology.
