Australia to Release Climate Projections in 2014

April 8, 2011

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization is about to release in 2014 the next set of Australia's climate projections in time for the release of the global assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

"There is a massive demand for climate change information, so we need to generate projections based on the latest science, delivered in ways that are relevant to the general public, government, industry, consultants and NGOs," says a senior scientist with the Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research, CSIRO's Dr. Penny Whetton. Whetton also added that for the 2014 projection, the scientists will have to use twice the number of climate models available in the last projection in 2007, together with a new set of emission scenarios. The projections will be vital in other research studies such as in the development of next generation of GM crops.
