February 11, 2011

HarvestPlus, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and the Indian Government's Department of Biotechnology (DBT) started the Crop Biofortification Research and Development meeting last February 7 in New Delhi, India. The meeting includes a week of activities focused on agriculture, health, and nutrition. One of the main objectives of the meeting is to assess the developments in breeding more nutritious varieties of staple crops such as rice, wheat, maize, and pearl millet.

HarvestPlus Director, Dr. Howarth Bouis, delivered the opening remarks and stressed that "biofortification has the potential to reach the greatest number of people in India" and that the meeting will help identify the right way to rapidly advance biofortified crops in the country.
