EFSA Holds Public Consultations on Draft ERA Guidelines

October 8, 2010

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) held a series of meetings with representatives of non-governmental organizations and Genetically Modified (GM) applicants to discuss draft updated guidelines for the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) of GM plants. Comments from the participants will be considered in the finalization of the guidelines due end of 2010. EFSA conducts regular consultations with stakeholders to ensure a wide range of views to improve on guidelines related to GM plant environmental risk assessment. The ERA guidelines are a result of more than two years' work by European scientists. They include data requirements to assess the safety of GM plants for the environment and has a specific section on possible effects of GM plants on non-target organisms.
