Agriculture Needs to be More Productive

October 16, 2009

Agriculture will have no choice but to be more productive as a result of population growth, increase in income,  and urbanization. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Director-General Jaques Diouf made this statement during the opening of the High-Level Expert Forum on How to Feed the World held in Rome, Italy.

"The challenge is not only to increase global future production but to increase it where it is mostly needed and by those who need it most. There should be a special focus on smallholder farmers, women and rural households and their access to land, water and high quality seeds, and other modern inputs," stressed Diouf.

Some 300 international experts are in Rome to tackle issues related to investment needs, technologies and policy measures needed to address the world's food requirements by 2050.
