Super Hybrid Rice Project Launched in Hunan

September 11, 2009

A research project that aims to develop "super hybrid rice'" using molecular breeding technology has been launched in Changsha City, Hunan, China recently. Attending the launch were Hunan vice-governor Han Yongwen, China's "father of hybrid rice" Yuan Longping, and academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. With the project, Hunan expects some 8 to 12 patents to be applied within the next 3 years.

"As a major project for Hunan's science and technology development, this research project endeavors to bring Hunan's technology of molecular breeding for super hybrid rice more in line with international standards and to firmly support the sustainable development of Hunan hybrid rice," says an article published in the provincial government's website. Researchers from all over China will work with Yuan Longping on the project.
