Gabon Joins WARDA as Member Country

August 14, 2009

The member countries of the Africa Rice Center (WARDA) have approved Gabon's application to join the Center. The West African country has one of the largest per capita rice consumption levels in the continent. Gabon seeks to boost its rice production and reduce its dependency on imports. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the country produces 1,100 metric tons of rice annually.

WARDA was established by 11 countries in 1971. Since 2007, six countries have joined the Center (Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Republic of Congo and Uganda). Currently the Benin-based center has 23 member countries from all regions of Africa.
