USDA Releases Updates on Agri-biotech in Italy and France

November 9, 2016

The USDA FAS Global Agricultural Information Network released an update of the current status of agricultural biotechnology in Italy and France. For both countries, the general attitude towards biotechnology remains hostile.

According to the reports, Italy and France continue to import biotech commodities for dairy and livestock feeds. No field trials are being conducted in both countries. In Italy, the negative perception of the public towards biotechnology is attributed to the media coverage on GE crops and research debate. In France, biotech critics remain to be influential in forming public opinion about the technology. However, better acceptance of biotechnology is exhibited by grain producers, animal feed compounders, and scientists.
