African Experts Validate MDG 2015 Report

June 3, 2015

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), together with its partners validated the 10th edition of the Millennium Development Goals on Africa. Focal persons from UNECA and its partners African Union Commission (AUC), United Nations Development Programme's Regional Bureau for Africa (UNDP-RBA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) convened in Algiers, Algeria on May 3-4, 2015, together with representatives from civil society and participants from a total of 51 African nations.

During the meeting, lessons learnt from the efforts towards achieving the MDGs were discussed. It was concluded that even if not all of the goals were achieved, all countries have made progress in at least one target of the MDGs. The importance of communication was also emphasized in the achievement of the MDGs. The National MDGs reports facilitated the civil society organizations and other stakeholders to encourage the governments to strengthen their initiatives and allot resources towards the fulfillment of the MDGs. On the other hand, regional reports allowed cross-country comparison, peer-learning, and emulation.
