Bio Kelantan 2013 to Spur Biotech Development

Kelantan Chief Minister Nik Aziz Nik Mat launched the premier biotechnology event, Bio Kelantan 2013 to accelerate biotechnology for Kelantan, Malaysia through bio-economy. Themed "Bringing Back Islamic Civilisation through Biotechnology"  the event was organized by the Kelantan Biotech Corporation Sdn Bhd. 

Nik Aziz said that Islam imposes no restrictions on biotechnology research, rather considers it as an "ibadah" (act of worship) and a means towards better living. He also pointed out the crucial role of the science in promoting food security and easing poverty.

In conjunction with the opening ceremony, two strategic collaborative agreements were exchanged between Kelantan Biotech Corp and Poothon Agriculture Industrial Co Ltd, and MG Ecotech Sdn Bhd for technology transfer of agricultural microbial and microbial technology for solid waste management respectively.

The three-day event held at the Kelantan Trade Centre hosted 30 booths.  The public and private sectors showcased a vast array of products derived from local bioresources. The Bio-Kelantan 2013 also featured a series of seminars and activities to create awareness on science and technology through an interactive school programme MyBiotech@School. Students got a taste of biotechnology, its potential, issues and global news through this programme.
