Links Between Nutrients, Genes, Cancer Spread

The spread of cancer cells or metastasis to other body organs, is what kill cancer patients, says Gary Meadows, a Washington State University Professor. However, this can be remedied by diet, nutrients and plant-based chemicals. He studied various plants and found that 40 plant-based compounds such as amino acids, vitamin D, ethanol, ginseng extract, the tomato carotenoid lycopene, curcumin (a component of turmeric), pomegranate juice, and fish oil among others, can turn on genes that slow the spread of cancer .
The substances promote epigenetic response or changes in the genetic expression and cellular characters and could turn metastasis suppressor genes on or off. These epigenetic changes are influenced by diet and nutrition. There are a number of studies which relates nutrients and metastasis suppressor genes that would open doors to more deliberate research into the genes. This study can also play an important role in the shift from preventing cancer to living with it and keeping it from spreading, Meadows concluded.
