Eastern African Countries Prepare for the Meeting of the Parties (MOP)7 |

ISAAAAfriCenter, in partnership with African Biosafety Network of Expertise (ABNE)-New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), organized a one-day meeting to familiarize biotechnology and biosafety stakeholders in eastern Africa with the issues to be discussed in the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP)/ Meeting of Parties (MOP)7 meeting. The meeting, which was attended by representatives from 10 countries was held on August 20, 2014, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the Intercontinental Hotel. The workshop involved national biosafety focal points, scientists, and experts on biotechnology and biosafety issues.

Brazil Considers Biotech Trees |
Brazil, the second largest grower of biotech crops in 2013, is now looking at growing biotech eucalyptus trees. Biotech eucalyptus trees, developed by FuturaGene, produces 20 percent more wood than conventional trees and is ready for harvest in 5.5 years instead of 7. At present, Brazilian regulators are evaluating the trees for commercial release and a decision is expected to come out by the end of the year.
