Engineered Lettuce and Tobacco Plants to Produce Meat Protein |

Scientists from Imperial College London and partners have engineered lettuce and tobacco plants to produce myoglobin, a protein found in animal muscle that gives meat its red color and contributes to its flavor. The approach could provide a plant-based alternative to produce an important ingredient for meat alternatives while potentially reducing the land, water, and emissions associated with livestock production.

EFSA Assessment Finds No Unanticipated Safety Risks from MON 810 |

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published its scientific assessment of the 2024 post-market environmental monitoring (PMEM) report for MON 810, the genetically modified insect-resistant maize cultivated in the European Union. Based on a weight-of-evidence evaluation of data provided by the consent holder and Competent Authorities of Portugal and Spain, EFSA concluded that MON 810 cultivation continues to show no evidence of unexpected adverse effects on human health, animal health, or the environment.
