ISAAA Inc. and DA-BPO Bring Agri-biotech Solutions for a Changing Climate to NBW

Every year, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), Inc. participates in the week-long celebration of the National Biotechnology Week (NBW), featuring a series of events and activities highlighting various innovations in biotechnology in the country. The 22nd National Biotechnology Week, with the theme “Biotek Para sa Kinabukasan: Kalikasan, Kalusugan, Kagandahan, Kabuhayan, at Kaunlaran,” will be celebrated from September 21-24, 2026, at the DENR Multipurpose Hall, Quezon City.

Cultivating Resilience: A Forum on Ag-biotech Solutions for Climate-Smart Agriculture

For this year's NBW, ISAAA Inc. and the Department of Agriculture - Biotechnology Program Office (DA-BPO), will hold a hybrid forum on September 24, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, highlighting how agricultural biotechnology can help Philippine agriculture address the challenges posed by climate change. The forum will introduce emerging biotechnology-based solutions that can help farmers adapt to rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, extreme weather events, and other climate-related challenges.

The forum will feature two presentations highlighting the role of agriculture and biotechnology in addressing climate change. Ms. Agnes Catherine T. Miranda, CESO III, Director of the Department of Agriculture Climate Resilient Agriculture Office (DA-CRAO), will discuss the landscape of Philippine agriculture amid climate change, providing an overview of climate change impacts on Philippine agriculture, the concept of climate-resilient agriculture, and DA-CRAO initiatives to strengthen agricultural resilience.

Dr. Leilani D. Pelegrina, Director of the Crops Research Division of the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), will present agri-biotech innovations for advancing climate-smart agriculture, exploring emerging biotechnology solutions such as stress-tolerant crops, climate-smart livestock, biofertilizers, and other innovations for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Jaime A. Manalo IV, Scientist II at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice).

The event will be held in a hybrid format, with on-site participation and online streaming via Facebook Live, allowing more stakeholders to learn about and engage with emerging solutions for a more sustainable future in Philippine agriculture. Registration for online access is now open.

ISAAA Inc. Joins the NBW Exhibit

Aside from the forum, ISAAA Inc. will also participate in the NBW exhibit, showcasing engaging communication materials that highlight the latest developments in agricultural biotechnology. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and other partners, these resources aim to make biotechnology information more understandable and relevant to a wider audience.

The exhibit will also feature interactive games, visual materials, publications, and face-to-face activities designed to encourage visitors to learn more about biotechnology. Hundreds of visitors are expected to take part in these activities, with game winners receiving ISAAA Inc. merchandise and publications.

Through its participation in NBW, ISAAA Inc. continues to promote meaningful conversations about biotechnology by bringing science and information closer to the public. From climate-smart agricultural solutions to engaging educational activities, ISAAA Inc. aims to help more Filipinos understand how biotechnology can contribute to Kalikasan, Kalusugan, Kagandahan, Kabuhayan, at Kaunlaran and ultimately, to a more resilient and sustainable future.
