GM Mango

Improved Flavor Characteristics

The Queensland Department of Primary Industries in Australia is developing mangoes with Kensington Pride flavor characteristics and that are also tolerant to anthracnose and Bacterial black spot diseases. Anthracnose is a fungal black spot caused by the fungus, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides which affects all parts of the mango tree. Bacterial black spot is caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae. Canker lesions forms on the fruits, leaves, and stems of infected plants. Similar research is carried out by the Agricultural Research Organization in Israel to enhance flavors in mangoes by controlling the genes responsible for the aromatic components of the fruit.
