GM Barley

Virus Resistance

The Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is considered to be the most common viral disease of cereal crops. Symptoms include yellowing of leaves which progresses up to the plant base, stunted growth, reduced tillers, sterile and with empty kernels. The virus is transmitted by aphids feeding on the plant. Disease expression is high when infection occurs during the seedling stage leading to plant death or dwarfing as well as sterile heads.

Researchers have incorporated the coat protein sequences of the BYDV into barley genome. This enables the barley plant to produce in minute amounts the viral coat protein that can prevent or at least attenuate the effects of subsequent infection of more aggressive BYDV strains.
