GM Banana

Delayed Ripening

Banana with delayed ripening trait is being developed by DNA Plant Technology Corporation (US) similar to the technology used in the Endless Summer™ Tomato. The technology is called Transwitch®. It involves the insertion of an anti-sense copy of ACC synthase gene into the banana plant thereby regulating the expression of the enzyme. This gene regulation prevents the production of ethylene, the hormone that triggers the ripening process of fruits. The advantage of using the anti-sense method is that, no novel protein is generated in the plant.
