South America

Countries with information on crop biotechnology:

  1. Brazil
Argentina, Mexico (really part of North America), and Uruguay are the only three countries in Latin America that have commercialized any GM crops, most of which are GM soybean, corn, and cotton.

Brazil recently signed a new law that gives the National Biosafety Technical Commission, CTNBio, overriding powers to authorize the production and sale of GM crops. This will take biotechnology forward in Brazil. Field trials are being carried out for crops including GM soybean, corn, cotton, tobacco, potato, and rice. Herbicide tolerant soybean will be available in the market very soon.

Bolivia is carrying out field trials for GM cotton and soybean but has not commercialized any GM crops.

Colombia is conducting field trials for GM cotton, carnations, and rice.
