GM foods currently in the marketplace in Australia and New Zealand include foods derived from soybeans, canola, potato, sugarbeet and cotton. These crops have been genetically modified to contain individual traits or combinations of traits that protect them from insects or viruses, provide tolerance to certain herbicides, or improve their nutritional quality.

Most of these are imported foods derived from GM crops grown and processed overseas. However, Australia grew 200,000 hectares of GM crops in 2000, mostly GM cotton.

Field trials continue to be carried out in the region. In Australia, crops that are being tested include cotton, corn, potato, carnation, canola, and tomato while in New Zealand, potato is the dominant crop being field tested.

For a full list of field trials, go to the OECD Database of Field Trials.
