For the first time, researchers from McGill University in Canada have successfully used CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology to improve plant growth and fiber content of oat (Avena sativa L.). This breakthrough addresses long-standing barriers in oat genetic improvement and opens up new opportunities for enhancing the traits of oats.

Gene Editing of Papaya Using Cas9 and Cas12a

Scientists from the University of Hawaii reported the successful use of two CRISPR systems, Cas9 and Cas12a, in editing papaya to address biotic and genetic variation problems. The preprint of their findings is published in BioRxiv.

CRISPR Confirms Rice Genes Responsible for Iron Uptake

Plants require soil iron for growth. While OsIRT1 and OsIRT2 rice genes are induced by iron deficiency, their role in iron acquisition is unclear. A study published in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry characterized their function, finding that both OsIRT1 and OsIRT2 could rescue Arabidopsis Atirt1 when they were driven by the CaMV35S promoter.
