Effective Stress Tolerance Through Biotech, Says Bangladesh Food Minister

January 20, 2012

"Bangladesh needs measures to effectively mitigate stresses that affect food security in the country such as the perennial floods, drought, salinity and other natural calamities including global warming," said Dr. M A Razzaque, Minister for Food and Disaster Management in his inaugural speech of the Biennial Conference of Plant Breeding and Genetics Society of Bangladesh. The minister believes that biotechnological interventions can effectively develop plants that can survive in stress conditions in Bangladesh.

Other noted speakers include SM Shajahan, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Agriculture who also supports the use of genetic manipulation in the development of stress tolerant; and Prof Dr. M. S. Alam, Vice Chancellor, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University who presented various biotechnology tools in the production of stress tolerant crop varieties.

The seminar with theme "Plant Breeding to address stress conditions in Bangladesh" was held on 10 December 2011 and attended by 250 scientists from different research institutes, universities and private sectors.
