OGTR Calls for Comments for Environmental Release of GM Wheat and Barley

January 6, 2012

Australia's Office of Gene Technology Regulator calls for comments for a Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan (RARMP) for the environmental release of genetically modified wheat and barley. The 118 lines of GM wheat have been improved to alter grain composition and enhanced nutrient utilization efficiency while 40 lines of barley contain genes for enhanced nutrient utilization efficiency.

The three-year field trial in Shire Merredin, Western Australia will be conducted to assess the agronomic performance and grain properties of the GM wheat and barley lines under field conditions. OGTR welcomes written submissions to finalize the RARMP by close of business on 10 February 2012.
