Chinese Scientists Map Goose Genome

June 17, 2011

Chinese scientists have finally sequenced the genome of Zhedong white goose after two years of extensive research. The researchers involved in the study were from Zhejiang Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Zhedong White Goose Institute in Xiangshan County of Zhejiang Province and Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), China.

Zhedong white goose is known for its rapid growth rate during the early stages of development. The complete sequence of the genome will be used to further understand its growth performance, as well as meat quality and breeding characteristics at the molecular level which will be used to breed high-quality varieties and improving reproduction.
