Agricultural Revolution Needed to Fight Food Shortages

January 28, 2011

There is a need for a worldwide agricultural revolution, with farmers producing more food at less cost to the environment, said UK Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman and International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell as response to Forefight's Global Food and Farming Futures report which estimates that one third of the world food production goes to waste, and that halving food waste by 2050 would have the same effect as increasing food production today by 25 percent.

Spelman and Mitchell stressed the role of governments, private sector and consumers towards achieving future food security. "We need a global, integrated approach to food security, one that looks beyond the food system to the inseparable goals of reducing poverty, tackling climate change and reducing biodiversity loss – and the UK Government is determined to show the international leadership needed to make that happen," said Spellman.
