Effects of High Night Temperature and Spikelet Position on Yield Characteristics of Rice Plants

August 6, 2010

Abdul Razack Mohammed and Lee Tarpley of Texas Agrilife Research and Extension Center conducted a study to investigate the effects of high night temperature (HNT) and spikelet position in the panicle of several rice yield-related parameters such as number of productive tillers, spikelet sterility (SS), and grain length, width and weight. The rice plants were grown under ambient night temperature or ANT (27oC) and HNT (32oC) in the greenhouse. Results showed that HNT decreased rice yield by decreasing grain length and width, and increasing SS. Increased SS under HNT was attributed to increased respiration rates, relative membrane injury, and decreased pollen germination. The position of the spikelet was also a factor in determining its weight and nitrogen concentration. The spikelets located at the tip of the panicle are heavier than the spikelets located at the base of the panicle.
