EU and Argentina Settle WTO Case on GMOs

March 26, 2010

The European Union (EU) and Argentina have mutually agreed to provide a regular mechanism for dialogue on agricultural biotechnology. This is in response to a World Trade Organization dispute that Argentina raised against the EU in 2003 regarding the application on biotech products. An earlier dispute by the EU against Canada has been settled but there is an impeding one with the United States.

Bi-annual meetings between authorities of the EU and Argentina will discuss among others:

  • Follow up of the authorization processes of GM products of both countries;
  • Biotech-related measures which may affect trade between Argentina and the EU, including measures adopted by the EU Member States;
  • Specific issues which arise in the context of requests for authorization submitted to regulatory evaluation; ยท
  • Exchange of information regarding other relevant issues in the field of agriculture biotechnology.
