Biotech Workshop For Farmers in Medan, Indonesia

March 12, 2010

The KTNA (National Outstanding Farmer and Fisherman Association) of Indonesia recently concluded a biotech workshop on the theme "Sustainable Modern Agriculture" in Medan, North Sumatera, Indonesia on 16 – 17 February 2010.  Dr. Edison Purba of the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara said that "biotechnology development is a possible alternative to help solve many challenges of conventional breeding techniques. Biotechnology has grown rapidly as a technology for solving human problems (food, health and environment). As a technology, biotech is not free from many risks, however with high precision, biotech foods undergo food safety testing  for human consumption." The head of KTNA Ir. Winarno Tohir discussed KTNA's policy in addressing agri-biotech developments in Indonesia. According to him, biotechnology can answer some challenges, including productivity improvement through a new, more productive and efficient production technology. He also emphasized that Indonesian farmers need biotechnology and they are ready to conduct field testing of biotech crops.

The fifth farmers' workshop was organized by the Indonesian Biotechnology Information Center (IndoBIC), KTNA, and Indonesian Society for Agricultural Biotechnology (PBPI) and supported by SEAMEO BIOTROP, CropLife Indonesia and the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications. It aimed to build biotech knowledge of stakeholders especially farmers, government agencies, and media in accelerating biotech acceptance in Indonesia. The event was participated in by 26 farmers from KTNA in North Sumatera,  Indonesia.
