Tropical Rice Being Adapted to Cold Environments

January 15, 2010

The cold temperature can cause sterility in rice, hence no grain is produced. In the January-March 2010 issue of Rice Today, a publication of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), efforts of scientists to adapt the tropic-loving rice to cold environments found in Korea and parts of Africa to boost yields are discussed. The issue also shows maps of rice production in cold temperature regions as well as high altitude areas in the tropics. Already, rice farmers from the upland regions of the Philippines are awaiting cold-tolerant rice varieties.
