Chinese Research to Benefit Pakistan's Agriculture Sector
Chinese research can help Pakistan in its quest for superior crop varieties to meet ever increasing national food grain requirements. The leader of a 4-member Chinese private sector delegation to Pakistan, Dr. John Liu, told Vice Chancellor Mujahid Kamran of Punjab University (PU): "We can provide expertise for the educational purpose of both students and farmers in Punjab through joint ventures. We have identified a Chinese hybrid rice variety with excellent performance and taste suitable for Pakistani consumers." He added that China could also share its rich experience in identifying the best quality wheat varieties to meet the demand and quality standard in Pakistan. Liu, an internationally acclaimed agricultural scientist, explained that the existing joint venture between Biocentury Transgene (China) and Guard Agricultural Research and Services, Lahore can help PU to establish a modern biotech laboratory which can be a part of this scientific collaboration.
