US Wheat Growers Orgs Publish The Case for Biotech Wheat

September 18, 2009

Biotechnology can make a significant contribution in helping reverse the loss of wheat acres in the United States. This is the conclusion of an eight-page analysis published recently by several US wheat growers organizations, including the National Association of Wheat Growers, North American Millers' Association, and the Wheat Foods Council. The associations pointed out that wheat production and area is on a long-term downtrend in the United States, and net returns per acre to farmers favor other crops in areas where options exist. "If these new [GM] technologies are available in other crops but not in wheat, the wheat production sector will continue its acreage and production decline toward status as a minor crop," the organizations wrote in the paper.
