CFIA Seeks Comment for Commercial Release of Drought-Tolerant Corn

March 27, 2009

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada (HC) have received an application from Monsanto Canada Inc. for the commercial release of its drought-tolerant corn MON87460. The transgenic corn expresses the cold shock protein gene csp from Bacillus subtilis and the antibiotic-resistance marker gene nptII from E. coli. The GM corn will be used as livestock feed and food if approved. According to CFIA, the application received is in accordance with their guidelines for assessment of plants with novel traits (PNTs) for unconfined release and guidelines for assessment of novel feeds from plant sources, and HC guidelines for assessment of novel foods.

CFIA and HC now seek public comments on the application. Comments should be received before June 22, 2009.
